Contract With America was written in 1994 by Newt Gingrich( Congressman From Georgia) to create a Republican majority in Congress that will enact laws to shrink the size of government, promoting lower taxes and entrepreneurial activity, and both tort and welfare reform. The series of laws passed the following years after the GOP took both senate and house of representatives under the leadership of then- House Speaker Newt Gingrich and House Majority Whip now indicted and former congressmen Tom Delay. Since The Contract With America in 1994 the GOP leadership has crumbled under corruption scandals, indictments, sex scandals and promises that were not kept to the American people by the contract with America. Instead of keeping to their promise of honest smaller government we got politicians representing k-Street like Jack Abramoff and others like Rep. Randall Duke Cunningham of California going to prison for bribes etc. We saw for the first time in American History a surgence in K-Street influence on legislation like the Jack Abramoff Scandal and The Chamber of Commerce lobby for a guest worker program for illegal immigrants. The Bush Administration was no help on foreign policy and fiscal responsibility with current spending, trade deficits in the trillions for a war in Iraq that has only got 3,000 us soldiers dead and has stemmed any terrorist attacks anywhere while creating a civil war between Sunnis and Shiites at the same time with trade policies that send jobs and factories overseas to slave-wage labor markets like China, Central America, India where there are no laws protecting workers and conditions in workplace leaving American workers seeking unemployment and federal aid programs . as a result the GOP lost both houses on November 7th. The answer is not another Regan-style contract with America that has failed miserably. The Republican Party needs re-evaluate the history of their party to see what is the real solution. I am not saying the GOP should become a carbon copycat of the Democrats. I am saying the GOP needs a middle ground with a big tent philosophy that accepts ideas in from all over the political spectrum regardless if the idea is Liberal or Conservative to have solutions to address problems that concern American voters. The current philosophy of trying to be the most conservative only divides, not unites the country. My goal for the Republican Party is not a platform for the Conservative movement or K-Street. My goal is for the Republican Party to be the party for the American people.
